Does thread go bad?
January 5, 2025
A friend of mine one day told me that some people put the date they purchased the thread on the spool. I thought she was joking, it completely blew my mind. However, after some research I found out that thread does go bad. So, buying a box full of old thread is probably not a good idea. Technically you could use it, but you will have issues like breakage and discoloration. Storage is very important. Keep it away from direct sunlight, dust-free (good luck with that here in Roswell), and avoid humidity, so no plastic bags. One thing I learned is that synthetic fibers will last longer than cotton. And the second thing I learned that Polyester is durable, strong, sturdy and low shrinkage. Polyester also has proven to be quite resistant to UV rays, moisture has little to no effect on it. However, too long exposed to direct sunlight will eventually weaken it.
Suggestion 1: Don’t buy cheap thread spend a little more money and buy quality thread.
Suggestion 2: Store your threads correctly and it will last longer.
Test your thread: take a piece of thread, as long as your forearm. Then, go ahead and tie a sturdy knot in the middle of it. After that, start pulling gently from both ends. By doing that, you will be testing both the knot and the thread itself. You might not be aware of this, but the strength of a thread or a rope is reduced by half once you put a knot in it. If the thread breaks when you pull on it toss it. If it resists your efforts, it is good to go!
I have to go store my threads correctly. Have a great day! V
